The Church is a mouth

In the latest issue of Christianity Today Rick Warren is quoted as saying: "The church is the body of Christ. The hands and feet have been amputated and we're just a big mouth, known more for what we're against." (p.34)

Isn't that some of what has driven the emerging movement? I know that's what drives me to a large degree. Any thoughts?

Wow, that's quite the statement from Rick Warren. I doubt that most churches would agree with that. But that takes me back to McNeal in The Present Future talking about the church culture bubble.

I really like the idea that the emerging church is trying to get back to the fullness of the gospel, but at the same time, I know how offensive it is to me when I'm asked, "Is your church Full Gospel?" and what they mean is some specific doctrine on tongues.

I once compared the church to Stephen Hawking, a brilliant scientist confined to a wheel chair with no use of his arms or legs. Looking back, that was too offensive of a statement.
