Clerical Collars

Pastor George Jensen sent me this note:

Brian,
I just read a different blog (paradoxology.com) where emerging church pastors among various evangelical groups are encouraging other pastors to wear clerical collars. I thought it would be interesting to find out, does anyone in the cggc wear a clerical collar? Is this something that may become a reality in the emerging cggc? This is just something I would suggest because I found it interesting. Maybe others would find it off the wall—who knows. By the way, I love reading the blogs. I learn a good bit. I haven’t commented since I am not a big techno person.

Anyway, keep up the good work. May God’s Kingdom grow.

George, I haven't heard anything of the such. I'm pretty missional and for me, the congregation are really the ministers. I am an equipper. Perhaps the congregation should wear collars. I'd be interested in some kind of shock collar that kept me from straying from God. :)

What I say here is merely an opinion.

I appreciate what George is saying.

However, I think that however the CGGC practices ministry in the emerging culture, we need to stay connected to our roots.

In Revelation 2, Jesus told the church at Ephesis to "do the things you did at first."

In our context, I take that to mean that we should incarnate ourselves to this generation in a way that is true to the best part of our history and our identity in the Body of Christ.

We have always been 'low church' and pietistic. And, I think we need to manifest ourselves in the emerging culture from that perspective.

George,

Why don't you get on board and write your own posts. What you have to say is important!

George,
I think that what you haved found is interesting. Do you know if the site was from a mainline "Collared" church background?

I don't think that this is what the generation is looking for, I may be wrong, but I think that there is a desire for authenticity and pastors who are real people, just like them. Rituals and Icons seem to be important for the feeling of serving a great God, but I don't think that collars are part of that. JMO (Just My Opinion)

I hope that you are going to post in the future, I too think your thoughts are very important, thanks!

Desert Pastor, aka Chris Monroe, aka the pastor behind paradoxology.com is an internet friend of mine and has a lot of great insights. I encourage you to all read his blog.

That being said, I don't think his perspectives on wearing collars is inherently "emerging". It may or may not be a good idea, but it's pretty much his own opinion. Keep in mind that DP pastors a Free Methodist emerging church where collars are already a normal, expected part of their attire. I would imagine that in a "low church" culture like in the CGGC wearing collars would probably be more of an oddity and distraction than it would be a meaningful practice.

But hey, whatever floats your boat!
