Christian Responses to Immigration

This past Monday I was a part of a Faith & Politics Forum that I personally initiated and organized at the suggestion of one of the local congressional candidates. Our hope was that we'd get Christians thinking about how their values relate to the key issues of this upcoming election. I moderated a panel discussion by local clergy on the topic of "Christian Responses to the Immigration Crisis". It was a good time and an event we hope to repeat.

You can read my summary of the event here.

Mike,

One of my frustrations as a (former) church planter was that I could never break into our local political scene - although I made many efforts.

Out of curiosity, and maybe feeling a bit of the "what might have been" bug, how is your involvement in this forum helping promote your church plant?

And while I am thinking about it, what positive responses did you receive from the E-Bay Athiest visit?

Thanks.

Brent

I don't know if it's "promoting" our church so much as it's just the kind of thing our church wants to be involved with in the first place. We believe that the kingdom of God has implications for how we engage with our society, and that includes politics. For us immigration is one of those issues of justice and compassion that fits into our calling as a church. And beyond that, we have a desire to form connections with other area churches and begin working towards more unity among the body of Christ.

So, regardless of whether or not this was good advertising for our church, it was something that was in line with our vision and values. That's why we did it.

As for the eBay atheist, it was good exposure for our church and free advertising in the community. I submitted an article to the local paper (along with a picture of me and Hemant), and several people around town or visitors to the church have commented that they remember us from the article.

We actually take a lot of advantage of the local paper. They are desperate for any kind of articles, so I try to do a write up for them whenever we are doing anything interesting.
