Ingredients of Conversation

Scot McKnight is doing a series of posts: The Art of Conversation 1; The Art of Conversation 2; and today's The Art of Conversation 3. It is #3 that particularly caught my eye. He discusses some "ingredients" of a good conversation (and therefore good conversationalist). His ingredients are:
1. A good conversation requires a safe environment.
2. A good conversation requires a good topic or a good question.
3. A good conversation operates on the basis of frequently-unexpressed but nearly always assumed, shared assumptions.
4. A good conversation requires the spirit of exploration and experimentation.
5. A good conversation desires wisdom.
This blog has not been real active lately, and I realize this isn't a very conversational post either - more of a 'sharing of information' - but... I thought it was good. Perhaps you can think of some other ingredients that make for good conversation(?).

Hi Pastor Dan,
Why this blog has been so quiet has been a bit puzzling. There is definitely a search for wisdom expressed here, and I've learned much from reading the posts.

Certainly there are many good topics and questions that have been eagerly explored.

As for shared assumptons...
although many participants of this blog have differing viewpoints, there exists at least a foundation of shared assumptions: Jesus is Lord; we are all called to discipleship and evangelism; etc.

So, I'm wondering if the problem isn't #1???

Pastoring ain't easy, is it?
God bless you all, and thank you for your sacrifice and dedication in the name of the Word.

Peace,
Felicia Swavely

Felicia,
Thanks for sharing. I agree, the "safety" of the environment probably has a lot to do with it. I wonder if there aren't other reasons too. I wonder if group blogs are difficult when we wonder if the "shared assumptions" are all the same. I know it's been quite an issue before, and I have wondered how much that had to do with so many not rejoining the blog after the switch to beta(???).

Either that or maybe people are bored with blogging in general, or this blog in particular. I dunno.

As far as pastoring not being easy... I don't know that it's any more difficult than anything else; but merely 'loving God and loving others' ain't all that easy sometimes. :)

peace & blessings.
