Postmoderns Take on Modern Lone Wolf in Prime Time

Gang,

I don't watch much TV, although I am an American Idol junkie. But, I did catch last night's (October 31st) episode of Criminal Minds. It was fascinating.

It seems that the FBI crew that solves serial killing crime sprees has had a former agent come out of retirement to join the team. The episode ended with an encounter between the retired agent and the unit's chief. Up to this point, the unit has always solved crimes as a community in which everyone contributes to the effort. The older agent was caught by the camera several times taking notes for himself and, in the end, asserted himself in solving the crime.

At the end of the episode nothing was resolved. Clearly, the story line surrounding the new character will center on a lone modernist finding his way in a postmodern community. I will be watching with interest.

At least, until the Wednesday night American Idol results show return.

Does anyone else watch the show?

American Idol is the devil's playground. I wouldn't watch that show with a ten foot pole (I know, I know, I'm probably the ONLY person who doesn't watch it).

Now Criminal Minds.... There is a good show. We usually watch it every week, although unfortunately I missed last nights episode due to an Illini preseason basketball game. :(

Good take on it.

Bill,

You REALLY need to start watching LOST when it comes on in February. You talk about a fascinating blend of postmodern, modern, theology, superstition, science, and sociology - this is the show. I haven't seen Criminal Minds, but my hunch is that LOST will "kick its' butt" in terms of doing a better job of contrasting the modern with the postmodern. That's why I hope you will watch it. I'll try to watch Criminal Minds some time if my schedule allows.

Alas, George, I don't have exclusive control of the remote in my home.

And, come February, I'll be spending time intermittently with Simon, Paula, Randy and Ryan on Wednesdays, depending on commericial breaks. I can say that, among the Millennial generation people in the congregation, Lost is considered riveting.

I started watching Criminal Minds on occasion by accident ... as in busily typing away at the computer doing something else when it came on. I will grant that it is a fascinating show and this is an interesting insight.

And, sorry fans, but Lost just made me think too darn much for entertainment at first. Now I'm just ... well ... er ... lost when I try to watch!

I know, I know, I'm way past postmodern...so does that make me post-postmodern? Anyway, yes I did see the Criminal Minds episode. It was interesting to see the guy come back to work (I enjoyed him as the Dad on Joan of Arcadia, an interesting show of its own)and work on his own and yet work with the group.

It will indeed be interesting to see how the team mixes...as it is the church as well.

Interesting observations. However, if there's one genre of entertainment that has no appeal to me whatsoever it is crime dramas. I can't stand anything to do with cops, criminals, investigators, or lawyers (or doctors either, though that's a different matter). Sadly that seems to be the predominant kind of show on tv these days.
