The Great Emergence

A week ago I added some comments about a recent book under Lousy Pastor. The other night I was outside working in the yard when my neighbor starts talking about a book by Phyllis Tickle. I asked, "The Great Emergence"? And he said, "Yeah, I just finished it. Would you like to read it"? So during the Penn State /Michigan game I started reading. (There is a lot of down time during a football game.) I highly recommend it.

Here is the thesis: every 500 years there is a transformation in church life. The Great Schism, The Reformation, etc. Someone may assign a time or a date or a person' s name but the seeds were sown long before the date. So here in 2008 the waters are already rising and we may have a few years before the dam breaks--but break it will. 200 years from now some historian will write about it and set a date with someone's name assigned but we know that this movement--The Great Emergence--began when a bunch of malcontents started crying in the river.

Every tear shed for the church as she should be makes the river rise. Keep it up guys.

The Great Emergence began on March 28, 2001 when Brian McLaren nailed his manuscript of "A New Kind of Christian" to door of the Wheaton College chapel...

...or maybe I'm confused. :)
