Missional communities

I wish I had a better understanding of all things 'missional'... but since I don't, I thought I would recommend someone who seems to. Ben Sternke is doing some good stuff in my neck of the woods (Fort Wayne, IN), and he has a really nice series of posts called Why I Believe in Mid-Sized Communities, focusing on the impulse, rationale and practicalities behind organizing a church around missional communities of 20-50 people. It is broken into 11 parts (click on the above link, or each individual link below). There is some good stuff there.
  1. What’s the Big Deal?
  2. What Does It Look Like?
  3. The Early Church
  4. Oikos in the Bible
  5. Sociological Matters
  6. Being the “Right Size”
  7. Is Structure a Dirty Word?
  8. Making Disciples
  9. A Culture of Discipleship
  10. Our Path to Get There
  11. Challenges of Transition

Dan,

This is good stuff, and I appreciate you pointing me toward it. Many of his conclusions are the same ones I've been coming to about discipleship for several years.

THE #1 issue for me in our church right now is how we will make disciples. Is it not ironic that after decades of the "church growth movement" we in the western church do not know how to do the thing Jesus gave us as our primary mission? We need to define what we believe discipleship really is (and Sternke does a great job), and try to understand how we can do this in our own contexts (and in some cases, perhaps mess with our church contexts to be able to do it.
